Francesca Toolkit
Navigation
The Tool Classification & Pathway Builder organises the 22 FRANCESCA tools by focus, value chain position, and stage in the nine-phase circular business model innovation process. Users can explore the full matrix by BMI phase or use the Pathway Builder for targeted guidance. By selecting their circular journey stage and priority area, companies receive one of fifteen curated tool sequences. Each pathway arranges relevant tools in a logical progression, providing a clear entry point and structured route through the toolkit.

The Tool Classification & Pathway Builder presents the FRANCESCA circular business model innovation toolkit as a two-dimensional matrix. The vertical axis runs from tangible to systemic (material, product, service, organisational, ecosystem), and the horizontal axis follows value chain position (upstream supply and design, the focal firm, downstream market and customer, and cross-chain). Each of the 22 tools sits in one cell and is positioned by its stage in the nine-phase BMI process, from awareness and strategy through diagnosis, ideation, design, experimentation, implementation, assessment, and scaling. Clicking a tool opens its purpose, format, level, and value chain position in a side panel. The interface has two modes. “Explore All Tools” lets users filter the full matrix by BMI phase to see which instruments serve a given stage of the transition. “Pathway Builder” asks two profiling questions, the company’s stage in its circular journey (just starting, developing, scaling up) and its priority area (product and design, business model innovation, service and customer, reverse flows and materials, ecosystem and governance), and returns one of fifteen curated sequences. Each sequence orders the relevant tools into a logical progression with a short rationale, so that a company does not face 22 undifferentiated instruments but a defensible entry point and a route through them.
